We are located on the small island Seløy in Herøy Municipality, Nordland (please note that there is a Herøy at the west coast of Norway as well, this is the Nordland version). The island is just outside the city Sandnessjøen and the mountain range The Seven Sisters (pictured above from Seløy on a beautiful November day. Photo: Line Møller, VG). Herøy and the neighboring municipality Dønna are connected by bridges, narrow roads and stunning scenery. The towns of Mosjøen and Mo i Rana are also nearby. Surrounding us, you will also find island paradises such as the Vega Islands, Lovund, and Træna. Seløy can be a destination in itself, but it is also a great resting place for travelers on their way to or from Lofoten, for example. The island is located almost exactly in the middle of Norway.
By sea
First of all: Get the Reis Nordland app to check ferry schedules and local public transport. To reach Seløy, you need to take a ferry or boat. Either from Sandnessjøen to Dønna (Bjørn) or from Søvik to Herøy. These are your two main options. You can also take a speedboat («hurtigbåt») to Herøy, this type of vessels take no cars, but bycycles. Note that the stop on Herøy is called Flostad in the app. From the ferry dock at Dønna/Bjørn to Seløy there is 22 kilometer (25 minute drive) and from Herøy/Flostad 13 kilometer (17 minutes drive). The total travel time from Sandnessjøen is ca. the same.
Remember: the last ferry usually departs around 10 PM. If you are traveling via the coastal road from Brønnøysund, it is important to check all departures. There can be a line and some waiting time, especially at sunny days, we recommend to be early at the dock. Please note if you travel with ferry from Sandnessjøen to Dønna/Bjørn: Some trips to go via Løkta and take over an hour, while the regular travel time is 20 minutes. Check the travel time in the app to know which departures to choose.
If you are looking for a dock for your own boat for a longer stay at Seløy, you need to contact local operators. We are located near the Coop grocery store on the island, which also has a guest dock for those who wish to combine shopping with a stroll to Skolo (note: a maximum 50-minute stay for boats at this dock).
Sail with the Coastal Express to Sandnessjøen
Both Hurtigruten and Havila Voiages makes stops in Sandnessjøen both on its northbound and southbound routes. Bringing your car or bicycle onboard and experiencing a leg of the journey by sea can be a remarkable adventure.
Tickets and travel Pass Nordland
The ferries are free! Travel Pass Nordland is a travel ticket that gives you unlimited access to all buses, speedboats, and this year also includes ferries in Nordland for an entire week at a fixed price. It's a smart solution if you plan to travel around a bit. More information can be found here. (You can change the language at the page to English if you scroll).
Bycycle
Cycling between the islands can be a fantastic experience and a practical way to get around. For example, you can cycle from Sandnessjøen, take the ferry, and arrive at Seløy. Bicycles can be rented in Sandnessjøen, which has a tourist information center in the town. You can also rent a bicycle at Sandnessjøen Airport through Widerøe and at Herøy Kajakk & Sykkel: Tlf: +47 98889317 or mail henning@heroy-kajakk.no. The roads are narrow in some places and the weather can vary greatly, even in the summer, so plan your trip well. We have five bikes available for our staying guests; city bikes with three gears, helmets included, and one child seat available. They can not be reserved in advance and are only suitable for local, short trips, so we recommend to rent your own if you prefer to travel this way.
Train to Mosjøen
The nearest train station is in Mosjøen. If you are coming from the south, the train journey from, for example, Trondheim Airport Værnes to Mosjøen takes just under five hours. From Mosjøen, you can take a bus to Sandnessjøen, departing shortly after the train arrives.
Airplane and Taxi
The nearest airport is Sandnessjøen Airport, Stokka. You can purchase tickets from Widerøe. Last-minute tickets can be expensive, so we recommend planning your trip well in advance if you prefer to fly. In the summer there are direct flights from Oslo to Sandnessjøen: It takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel from Oslo Gardermoen to Sandnessjøen by direct flight. There is an airport bus service to Sandnessjøen, or you can just order a taxi from the airport to Søvik. Check the app Taxifix, or Helgeland Taxi Service. If you need taxi when you arrive Dønna or Herøy, Herøy will be the shortest (and most cost effective) choice: Call + 47 458 87 958 (Herøy-Skolo is about 400 NOK, Dønna-Skolo 700NOK, you need to check this fixed price before booking the taxi).
Tip 1: All children traveling Widerøe with an adult can book Youth Tickets, which are often cheaper than child tickets. Buy the adult ticket first and then, in a separate operation with your flight reference ready, the Youth tickets.
Tip 2: Flying to Trondheim and then taking the train can be a cost-effective option.
